How to Use the PDF to Text Extractor
Quickly and easily extract all the text from your PDF documents. Here’s how it works:
- Upload Your PDF: Drag and drop your PDF file into the upload area, or click to select it from your device.
- Automatic Extraction: The tool will immediately start processing the file to extract all selectable text.
- Review & Download: The extracted text will appear in the text box. You can review it, copy it, or click the "Download (.txt)" button to save it as a plain text file.
Important Note on Scanned PDFs
This tool works by reading the text layer embedded in a PDF. If your PDF is a scan of a physical document (i.e., an image), it will not have a text layer, and this tool will not be able to extract any text. Support for scanned documents using Optical Character Recognition (OCR) is planned for a future update.

Extract Text from PDF Files — Free & Instant
Locked inside thousands of PDF documents is text that users need to copy, analyze, translate, or reformat. Ashwheel's free PDF to Text extractor makes accessing that content simple. Rather than manually retyping paragraphs from a PDF, upload the document and receive all selectable text in seconds, ready to paste anywhere.
What is PDF Text Extraction?
PDFs store content in two ways. "Selectable" PDFs embed actual text data that software can read directly. "Scanned" PDFs are photographs of pages — they look like text but are actually images. Our tool works with selectable PDFs, reading the embedded text layer and extracting every word, sentence, and paragraph into a clean plain-text format.
How the PDF Text Extractor Works
Upload your PDF using the drag-and-drop area or the file picker. PDF.js processes each page in your browser, reading the text content layer. The tool concatenates text from all pages in reading order and displays it in a scrollable text box. Click Download to save the extracted text as a .txt file, ready for use in any application.

- Extracts text from all pages automatically
- Clean, readable output in reading order

Who Uses PDF Text Extraction?
Writers and editors extract article drafts from PDF submissions for editing in Word or Google Docs. Researchers copy text from academic papers for literature review notes. Legal professionals extract contract clauses for comparison and analysis. Students copy study material from textbook PDFs into their notes. Businesses extract customer data or order details from received PDFs for system entry.
Limitations to Know
The tool cannot extract text from scanned PDFs — those require OCR (Optical Character Recognition), which is planned for a future update. Complex layouts like multi-column text, tables, and sidebars may not extract in perfect reading order. Mathematical formulas and special characters may not always render correctly in plain text. For such cases, copy-paste directly from a PDF viewer or use desktop tools with OCR support.
After Extracting — What Next?
Once you have the text file, you can translate it using Google Translate or DeepL, paste it into a word processor for formatting, run it through AI tools for summarization, import it into a spreadsheet for analysis, or use it as training data for NLP applications.
